Sport, Fitness and Recreation Volunteering is about:

Volunteers enrich Queensland communities and support sport, fitness, outdoor recreation and community recreation organsiations on a daily basis. Volunteers help build strong, healthy and inclusive communities across Queensland. Volunteers, as individuals, groups or companies really can make a difference.

The main reasons people volunteer are:

  • to help others or the community
  • for personal satisfaction
  • to do something worthwhile

Other benefits of volunteering are:

  • making new friends

  • developing new skills
  • improving health and well-being
  • getting job-ready
  • having fun.

You can get involved in your local community by volunteering in sport, community recreation, outdoor recreation or fitness activities. It's about

  • giving your time and energy to sport, outdoor recreation, fitness, or community recreation organisations, or to any event or activity which falls within one of those categories.
  • using your skills and abilities to assist organisations. You might not have an interest in participating in sport, or outdoor activities like rock climbing, or even doing fitness classes, but what about managing events, preparing marketing material, developing websites, setting up campsites or being a mentor?

  • lots of opportunities - there are more roles across outdoor recreation, sport, community recreation and fitness than you might think. Some might be one-off opportunities, others might be ongoing, but there is something for absolutely everyone.
  • personal development and living a full life - volunteering in these organisations can help you build friendships, discover new skills, gain confidence, develop experience, support a good cause, or make a difference. It's never too late to get in and give it a go, and there are thousands of great people looking forward to making it a great experience for you.

Sport, Fitness and Recreation Volunteer Portal Partners

This Volunteer Portal has been developed by Volunteering Queensland in conjunction with the Queensland Fitness, Sport and Recreation Skills Alliance. An industry committee has assisted the development of this portal.

The Sport, Fitness and Recreation Volunteer Portal has been funded by the Queensland Government with the aim of increasing the number of Queenslanders involved in their communities as sport and recreation volunteers. The Toward Q2: Tomorrow's Queensland volunteering target under the Fair Queensland ambition aims to increase the proportion of Queenslanders involved in their communities as volunteers by 50 per cent by 2020.

Queensland Fitness, Sport and Recreation Skills Alliance

The Queensland Fitness, Sport and Recreation Skills Alliance is a not‑for‑profit industry service organisation that supports workforce development in the sport, fitness, outdoor recreation and community recreation industry.

By workforce development we mean how an industry or organisation attracts workers, retains workers and provides learning and skilling opportunities. In our industry this applies to both employees and volunteers.

Creating workforce development opportunities and strategies is crucial. It allows the industry to have a workforce that is truly responsive to the needs of communities, clients and participants.

Our role includes:

  • undertaking projects that support workforce development in the industry
  • distributing information on workforce development to industry networks
  • collecting information from industry on issues, needs and trends and reporting this information to both government and the industry
  • supporting and encouraging industry networks to work together so they can identify and create opportunities to skill up their workforces.
